Albanian Alps Motorcycle Ride: 2-Day Route to Theth via SH20 & SH21

Theth Albanian Alps

Two-Day Motorcycle Trip to Theth National Park via Scenic Routes

This two-day motorcycle tour to the Albanian Alps is designed for riders who want to cross into Albania, spend a night in the beautiful mountain landscape, and enjoy some of the most scenic riding roads in the Balkans. While it works perfectly as a long weekend escape, the route can also be extended into a three-day journey through Albania or Montenegro’s northern region.

The main highlight of this trip is Theth National Park, located deep in the Albanian Alps. The experience goes far beyond the destination itself — the roads leading to Theth are what make this route truly special. SH20 and SH21 are considered two of the most scenic mountain roads in Albania, often compared to famous European alpine routes, while the return journey includes the iconic Kotor Serpentine in Montenegro.

This route combines mountain passes, remote villages, dramatic viewpoints, and coastal scenery into one compact but diverse motorcycle adventure.

Why SH20 & SH21 Are Among the Best Motorcycle Roads in the Balkans

The SH20 road climbs gradually from the shores of Lake Skadar into the Albanian mountains. The elevation changes, sweeping curves, and wide panoramic views make it a rewarding ride without feeling overly technical. Road conditions are generally good, and traffic is light compared to more central European alpine routes.

SH21, leading toward Theth, feels more remote and wild. The scenery becomes sharper and more dramatic as you approach the high mountain plateau. Riding here feels like stepping into another world — quiet, expansive, and visually powerful.

For riders looking for alpine scenery without heavy traffic, this region offers an authentic and less commercialized experience.

Day 1: Tivat - Theth

Your journey begins by following Montenegro’s coastline before heading inland toward the mountains of Albania. After crossing the border near Lake Skadar, the ride continues through SH20, one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the region.

As you climb higher, the landscape opens into wide valleys and rugged peaks. The road flows naturally, making it enjoyable on both mid-weight and sport-touring motorcycles.

Once you arrive in Theth, you are surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and a calm, remote atmosphere. The area isn’t extreme or technical, but it feels adventurous — a true transition from the coast to the heart of the Albanian Alps.

An overnight stay in Theth allows you to experience the quiet side of the mountains, especially in spring and autumn when tourism is lighter.

Day 2: Theth – SH20 – Kotor Serpentine – Kotor Bay – Tivat

The return ride is equally rewarding. You descend through SH21, enjoying a different perspective of the same mountain range. After re-entering Montenegro, the road curves toward Skadar Lake before climbing the famous Kotor Serpentine.

If time allows, you can stop at small roadside viewpoints for coffee or short breaks before returning to Tivat.

This final section of the ride brings together mountain passes, historic towns, and coastal scenery — combining the Montenegro-Albania border experience with the iconic landscapes of Kotor Bay.

Crossing the Montenegro–Albania Border by Motorcycle

Crossing into Albania by motorcycle is straightforward, provided you carry valid documents and insurance covering both countries. Border procedures are generally smooth, especially outside peak summer periods. If you are renting a motorcycle, make sure cross-border permission is included in your rental agreement.

Best Time to Ride the Albanian Alps

The best seasons for this route are late spring, early summer, and autumn. During mid-summer, coastal traffic can increase significantly, especially around Kotor Bay. The mountain sections remain quieter, but temperatures may be higher.

In early spring or late autumn, weather conditions in the mountains should always be checked in advance, as higher elevations may experience snow or road closures.
