Durmitor Motorcycle Ride: 2-Day Route to Northern Montenegro & Tara Bridge

Two days motorcycle trip to the north of Montenegro - Durmitor National Park

This two-day Montenegro motorcycle tour takes you from the Adriatic coast to Durmitor National Park — one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the Balkans. Every year, riders from across Europe and beyond visit northern Montenegro to experience its dramatic landscapes, alpine roads, and wide-open scenery.

The route connects Piva Lake, Sedlo Pass, Žabljak, Tara Bridge, and the famous Kotor Serpentine — combining mountain riding, panoramic viewpoints, and UNESCO-listed nature into a compact yet powerful long weekend escape.

While suitable for most experienced riders, certain sections require attention due to elevation changes, weather conditions, and mountain winds — especially outside peak summer season.

Why Durmitor Is One of the Best Motorcycle Destinations in Montenegro

Durmitor National Park offers rare riding diversity within a relatively short distance. In a single day, you transition from sea level to high alpine terrain above 1900 meters.

The roads are flowing and scenic rather than overly technical. Traffic is light outside July and August. Temperatures in the mountains are often 8–10 degrees cooler than on the coast, making this route particularly enjoyable during warmer months.

Sedlo Pass is considered one of the most scenic stretches in Montenegro — wide curves, exposed rock formations, and uninterrupted views across the plateau. The atmosphere feels expansive and remote, yet fully accessible on modern road-oriented motorcycles.

Day 1: Tivat - Piva Lake - Durmitor National Park - Zabljak

The journey begins along Montenegro’s coastline before heading inland toward the Bay of Kotor. Crossing the bay, you begin the gradual climb into the mountains.

As you continue north, the landscape shifts noticeably — from Mediterranean vegetation to rugged highland terrain. The road toward Plužine and Piva Lake offers flowing sections and beautiful views over turquoise water framed by steep canyon walls.

From Piva Lake, the ascent toward Durmitor begins. This is where the route becomes truly alpine. Shortly after crossing the bridge, the road starts climbing through open mountain scenery before reaching Sedlo Pass — the visual highlight of the day.

Weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations. Wind at the summit can be strong, even in summer, so riding awareness is important.

The day typically ends in Žabljak, a small mountain town that serves as a base for exploring Durmitor National Park. If time allows, a short walk to Crno Jezero (Black Lake) provides a peaceful contrast to the day’s riding.

Day 2: Zabljak - Tara Bridge - Niksic - Kotor Serpentine - Tivat

The second day begins with a ride toward Tara Bridge — one of Montenegro’s most recognizable landmarks. The bridge spans the Tara Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Europe, offering dramatic views and excellent photo opportunities.

From there, the route continues through northern Montenegro, passing small towns and open landscapes before descending back toward central regions of the country.

Optional stops include viewpoints around Lake Slano or quiet village cafés along the way.

The final section brings you back to the coast via the famous Kotor Serpentine. These tight switchbacks provide a completely different riding experience from the open mountain roads — technical, scenic, and visually striking as you descend toward Kotor Bay.

Arriving back in Tivat, the contrast between alpine highlands and Adriatic coastline becomes clear — all within two days of riding.
