Part 1: Tivat - Bar
Your first riding day kicks off in Tivat, with the route quickly climbing inland as you leave the coast behind. The journey begins with one of Montenegro’s most thrilling roads — the famous switchbacks above Kotor, known for their sharp curves and unforgettable views over the bay. It’s a dramatic start, and no wonder this stretch has featured in major motorcycle campaigns, including Ducati’s.
As you ascend, the air cools noticeably, offering a refreshing contrast to the coastal heat. Soon you’ll reach Lovćen National Park, where you can take a break for coffee and soak in the views. (A small entrance fee applies.) From here, you descend into Cetinje — a town steeped in royal history and once the capital of Montenegro. It’s a relaxed stop with a few cafés and museums, great for stretching your legs.
Continuing south, the route winds toward Lake Skadar. A panoramic viewpoint awaits before you reach Virpazar, a lakeside village known for its wine, fish, and traditional food — making it an ideal lunch stop.
From Virpazar, you have two options: head straight towards Bar via the modern road, or take the slower, scenic route through the hills to Petrovac, then follow the coastal highway to the city. Bar marks the end of the day — a lively port town where you’ll find plenty of accommodation and a chance to relax by the sea.
Part 2: Bar - Theth (via SH21) - Podgorica (via SH20)
Get ready for one of the most adventurous riding days of the trip. Today’s route takes you across the border into Albania, with plenty of curves as you follow the renowned SH21 and SH20 roads — both favorites among motorcycle enthusiasts. Your main destination is Theth National Park, nestled deep in the Albanian Alps and known for its dramatic mountain landscapes and remote beauty.
Once you arrive in Theth, take time to enjoy the alpine scenery and stop for lunch in one of the local guesthouses. The ride itself is a big part of the experience — quiet roads, breathtaking views, and a real sense of isolation from the busy world.
After exploring Theth, you’ll retrace your steps along SH21 (the only paved exit) before heading towards Shkoder. From there, you’ll pick up the SH20 again, leading you through the border and back into Montenegro.
Though it’s a demanding day in the saddle, it offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Albania’s most iconic regions in just a single day.
Part 3: Podgorica - Savnik - Pluzine - Sedlo Pass - Zabljak
Another long day awaits as you explore more of Montenegro’s natural beauty. Your journey begins in Podgorica, heading north toward Žabljak and Durmitor National Park. You’ll ride along the stunning E65 canyon road, known for its dramatic scenery, stone-cut tunnels, and winding curves.
At the end of the canyon, you’ll turn onto a less-traveled B-road toward Žabljak — offering breathtaking views that are well worth the detour.
From Žabljak, the route continues through Šavnik and into the Piva region, where you’ll pass by the emerald waters of Piva Lake. After that, you’ll ride over the famous Sedlo Pass and return to Žabljak for an overnight stay.
Tomorrow, you’ll complete the second part of the so-called Durmitor Ring — a panoramic road through the heart of Durmitor National Park.
Part 4: Zabljak - Susicko jezero - Sutjeska national park - Mostar
Today you’ll ride through Durmitor National Park again, but this time along a lesser-traveled route that takes you through breathtaking canyons and a series of twisty roads. This section is more technical, so the pace will naturally be slower — but the views are absolutely worth it.
After a couple of hours, you’ll descend toward Piva Lake and follow a beautiful lakeside road featuring numerous tunnels and bridges. You’ll pass the impressive Mratinje Dam before continuing toward the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Once across the border, your route leads through the scenic Sutjeska National Park as you head toward Mostar. Depending on your timing, you may wish to stop at Blagaj Tekke — a peaceful and picturesque spot near the source of the Buna River.
Upon arriving in Mostar, take the evening to relax and explore the Old Town, which is especially charming at night.
Part 5: Mostar - Kravica Waterfall - Dubrovnik
You might feel tired after four days on the road, so today offers a more relaxed half-day ride, giving you extra time to explore Dubrovnik. You’ll begin the day by heading toward Kravica Waterfall — it’s best to arrive early, before the crowds, to fully enjoy this magical place in peace.
From there, continue toward the Croatian border. After crossing, you’ll ride along scenic coastal roads and pass over the impressive Pelješac Bridge, which connects the Croatian mainland with the Pelješac Peninsula, bypassing the previously required border crossing through Bosnia.
After a couple of hours on the road, you’ll arrive in Dubrovnik — often called the southern capital of Croatia and famously used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
This is a perfect opportunity to spend the evening wandering the Old Town and enjoying its atmosphere as the city lights come on.
Part 6: Dubrovnik - Kotor Bay - Kotor - Tivat
Final day of your trip. Today includes plenty of scenic stops and beautiful views. You’ll begin by heading back into Montenegro, riding through the charming old town of Herceg Novi, then continuing along the picturesque Kotor Bay, known for its rich history and stunning coastal landscapes.
On the way, you’ll pass through Perast, Prčanj, and, of course, Kotor Old Town — a great place to stop for a walk or enjoy a relaxing lunch.
After some time in Kotor, you’ll begin the final stretch of your journey back to Tivat.
