Montenegro: Coast to Peaks (4 days)

Four-Day Motorcycle Trip around Montenegro
This four-day itinerary is designed for riders seeking dynamic riding and a complete introduction to Montenegro — from the sweeping southern serpentines to the northern mountain passes and alpine lakes. The route blends fast, flowing curves with slower-paced B-roads, allowing you to experience both the rhythm of the ride and the character of the country. Along the way, you’ll encounter Montenegro’s key highlights, all connected by some of its most rewarding roads.
Day 1: Montenegro Coast, Serpentines & Lovćen National Park (Tivat - Kotor Serpentine - Budva - Sveti Stefan - Skadar Lake - Podgorica)
Day one introduces you to some of Montenegro’s most iconic coastal and mountain riding, combining dramatic elevation changes, legendary serpentines, and sweeping Adriatic views.
The journey begins in Tivat, climbing immediately toward Lovćen National Park via the famous Kotor Serpentine — one of the most celebrated motorcycle roads in the Balkans. This historic mountain road delivers tight switchbacks and panoramic viewpoints overlooking Kotor Bay, offering your first taste of Montenegro’s unique riding character. As you gain altitude, temperatures naturally drop, adding another layer to the experience.
At the top, the route continues through Lovćen National Park, known for its open landscapes, quiet mountain roads, and expansive views across the country. From there, you descend toward Cetinje, the old royal capital of Montenegro, rich in history and cultural heritage.
The ride then flows back toward the Adriatic coast, opening up to scenic vistas as you approach Budva. From Budva, you follow a picturesque stretch of coastal road toward Petrovac, passing landmarks such as Sveti Stefan and enjoying relaxed, flowing curves alongside the sea.
Leaving the coast behind, the route turns inland via an old Yugoslav mountain road, climbing once again into central Montenegro. This section brings you to the shores of Skadar Lake National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans and an important nature reserve known for its diverse wildlife and wetlands.
The day concludes in Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital, where you settle in for the night after a ride that perfectly balances coastline, mountains, national parks, and classic Balkan roads.
Day 2: Remote Backroads, Alpine Lakes & Northern Montenegro (Podgorica - Grlo Sokolovo – Morača Canyon – Kolasin)
Day two focuses on quiet B-roads, flowing serpentines, and remote mountain scenery, taking you deep into parts of Montenegro that are rarely visited. Expect light traffic, open roads, and a strong sense of exploration throughout the day.
Departing Podgorica, the route heads toward the Kuči / Korita region near the Albanian border, riding a network of scenic backroads that open up panoramic views across valleys and canyons stretching toward Albania. One of the highlights here is the Korita viewpoint, along with the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the border — a striking and unexpected landmark in an otherwise remote setting.
Continuing deeper into the mountains, you reach Bukumirsko Lake (Bukumirsko Jezero) — a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by untouched nature. This quiet, high-altitude stop is one of Montenegro’s hidden gems and a perfect place to pause and take in the landscape.
From here, the route turns north, reconnecting with one of the country’s most scenic canyon roads — the Morača River Canyon. This stretch combines smooth asphalt, dramatic cliffs, and flowing curves, guiding you steadily toward the northern town of Kolašin.
Kolašin is your first overnight stop in northern Montenegro, known for its alpine character and noticeably cooler evening temperatures. It’s a year-round mountain town and a well-known ski resort in winter, offering a completely different atmosphere from the coast and central regions — a clear reminder of how diverse Montenegro can be within just a few riding days.
Day 3: Northern Montenegro, Tara Canyon & Durmitor Gateway (Kolasin - Tara Bridge - Zabljak)
Day three takes you deeper into northern Montenegro, riding through less-developed and lightly populated regions that reveal a more authentic side of the country. This is a day defined by open roads, flowing curves, and minimal traffic, offering a relaxed yet engaging riding rhythm.
Departing from Kolašin, the route heads north through a network of winding mountain roads, passing rural villages, small towns, and occasional industrial settlements. This section offers a rare glimpse into everyday life beyond the tourist routes, where Montenegro feels raw, quiet, and unchanged.
Continuing north toward the Pljevlja region, the landscape gradually opens up before descending into one of the country’s most dramatic natural landmarks — the Tara River Canyon. Here, you reach the iconic Đurđevića Tara Bridge, spanning Europe’s deepest canyon and offering unforgettable views over the turquoise waters far below.
From the bridge, the road climbs once again toward Žabljak, the highest town in Montenegro and the gateway to Durmitor National Park. Surrounded by alpine scenery and crisp mountain air, Žabljak marks a transition into high-altitude riding and sets the stage for the final day of the journey through one of Montenegro’s most celebrated national parks.
Day 4: Durmitor National Park, Piva Lake & Kotor Bay (Zabljak - Pluzine - Niksic - Kotor Bay - Tivat)
The final riding day is the highlight of the entire journey — a true grand finale that brings together Montenegro’s most dramatic landscapes and legendary roads.
Leaving Žabljak, you enter Durmitor National Park, one of the most beautiful national parks in the Balkans and a UNESCO-protected area. This section features one of the region’s most scenic mountain roads, combining high-altitude riding, open vistas, and a constant rhythm of sweeping curves through alpine terrain.
After crossing Durmitor, the route descends toward Piva Lake, famous for its deep canyons, turquoise waters, and striking mountain scenery. This stretch is remote, lightly trafficked, and exceptionally rewarding — a rider’s road defined by twists, elevation changes, and uninterrupted flow.
From here, the journey gradually leads back toward the Adriatic coast, transitioning from rugged highlands to milder southern landscapes. The ride concludes at Kotor Bay, a place rich in history and atmosphere. You follow the shoreline around the bay, passing through historic towns such as Perast, with its Venetian architecture, and Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled beneath towering mountains.
The route finishes in Tivat, where you arrive back on the coast and have time to unwind after four days of diverse, immersive riding — from alpine national parks to one of Europe’s most historic bays.
