We can make some modifications to it based on your preferences, time availability and the motorcycle you choose to ride. Additionally, we have designed this route in such a way that some parts of it can be excluded from the trip, if needed. You can also use the sections of this route as day rides. Part 1: Tivat – Bar – Ulcinj
You begin your motorcycle day in Tivat and head towards the famous Kotor serpentine via Prčanj. On your way, you’ll see the beautiful Kotor Bay, also known as the Kotor Fjord. The Kotor Serpentine is probably one of the most popular places on the Montenegro coast, especially among motorcycle riders from around Europe. One of the latest marketing campaigns for the new Ducati Multistrada was shot there.
From the top of the mountain, you’ll be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Kotor Bay before heading towards Lovcen National Park. Please note that the park has an entrance fee, which costs around 3 euros per person. You can stop there for a cup of coffee and enjoy a cooler climate compared to the coast of Montenegro. Usually, it is around 10 degrees cooler than Kotor or Tivat.
Next, you’ll head towards Cetinje, the former capital of Montenegro. These days, it’s an ordinary city that still preserves its heritage. You can walk around or have a snack there. Then, you’ll continue towards Skadar Lake, where you’ll see another famous viewpoint that you might have seen many times. After that, you’ll ride on a narrow, twisty road towards Virpasar village, also known as a fisherman village. That can be a good place for a proper lunch.
Now, you can jump to Part 2 or continue towards the coast via the old mountain scenic road to Petrovac city and, from there, continue via the coastal highway to the town of Bar. Bar is one of the most populated cities in Montenegro and a port city, offering connections to other countries via sea. You can finish your day here or continue towards Uncinj, one of the most popular destinations for kite surfers all year round. If you could ride until here, it’s probably the best time to take a break and call it a day.
Part 2: Ulcinj – Kolasin
Today can be a long and tiring day, but you’ll have options to shorten it. We will start from the coast and continue towards the northern part of Montenegro. For the first couple of hours, you’ll ride towards Skadar Lake and see where Montenegro borders Albania. This road requires a bit of concentration, but it compensates with the great viewpoints you are going to stop at along the way.
Your first proper stop will be at Virpasar, the fisherman village from day one. Here you can have a snack or maybe lunch, depending on your feelings. Then, you’ll take a road towards the capital of Montenegro – Podgorica. Podgorica is one of the hottest cities during the summer, and we do not recommend spending much time there unless you want to see the city and maybe spend time in a comfortable hotel and enjoy some European cuisine in one of the restaurants. But if your goal is nature, we advise you to continue towards Kolasin.
To go to Kolasin, you can take the newly built autobahn, but as usual, we want to see some nature, right? Let’s take E80 Canyon Road. This road is one of the most beautiful in Montenegro, and we highly suggest not skipping it. You’ll ride through numerous tunnels and twisties, so take time to enjoy it ;)
You’ll arrive in Kolasin, which is a great place to cool down after the day and have a proper traditional dinner in one of the restaurants we will advise you to visit. That would be enough for the second part of your journey.
Part 3: Kolasin – Zabljak – Pluzine
Another long day awaits as you explore the beauty of Montenegro. Your journey begins in Kolasin, where you will head towards Zabljak and Durmitor National Park. Zabljak is one of the highest cities, not only in Montenegro but also in the Balkans. Durmitor National Park is the most popular National Park in the region. You will travel on the old P4 backroad, which has plenty of turns and tunnels. On the way, you will stop by Biograd Lake and the famous Tara Bridge. If you’re a fan of zip lines, this would be the perfect place to test yourself.
As you continue your journey, you will reach Zabljak. Here, you can stop for the rest of the day and take some rest or continue towards your next destination, Pluzine. It’s important to note that going through the Durmitor National Park can take time, and no gas stations are on the way. So, if it’s late or the weather is not good, it’s probably better to call it a day. You can try traditional northern cuisine here and even do a hike towards Black Lake.
If you decide to continue, you will cross the national park and head towards Pluzine. You will see Piva Lake and numerous tunnels and bridges along the way.
Part 4: Pluzine – Durmitor – Captain’s Lake
Today, you will be riding a motorcycle in Durmitor National Park again, but this time you will follow a different route. That’s the beauty of this place, as there are several routes through the park, each of which will allow you to experience the park’s beauty from a different angle. During your ride, you will have the opportunity to stop in various locations and take pictures. This park is one of the most picturesque places in Montenegro, so take your time and enjoy it all.
After the park, you will be on the P5 highway for a while before heading towards Kapetanovo Lake. This is a remote location that is great for visiting during the summer, where you can stay overnight or even hike around. This ride will be more technical, but there are still many great places to see along the way. However, some parts of the ride can be skipped if you prefer. As always, we are happy to suggest modifications if you ask.
Part 5: Captain’s Lake – Ostrog – Kotor Bay
You are heading towards the coast for the final part of your trip. However, before we ride a motorcycle down there, there is another place to visit – Ostrog Monastery. This is a trendy place to visit among Orthodox Christians. The place dates back to the 17th century and is built into the rock, making it unusual. If you are interested in culture and history, this is worth visiting.
After visiting Ostrog, we will head back to the coast. This ride will be monotonous, so you can listen to music and enjoy the road. You can also stop by a salty lake to take a picture if you wish.
After almost two hours of riding, you will descend towards the coast and arrive at Kotor Bay. Riding around the bay will take another 40 minutes until you reach the Old City of Kotor. You will arrive there closer to nighttime, so stopping and walking through the old town will be a good idea. Remember that this place is a UNESCO-protected site, and depending on the season and time of day, the city can be busy with tourists.
Lastly, the final stretch of your journey will be towards the bike drop-off, which can be at your hotel or our office in Tivat.
